I think it would behoove all GW students (particularly women) to read A. Chace Wessling’s thoughtful letter to the editor (“Don’t sit on sidelines,” Oct. 3, p. 5), and then read the Bar Belle column of the same day (“Sign of the Whale,” p. 10). Then read Wessling’s letter again.
The juxtaposition – the irony – is startling. How quickly and easily the Bar Belle, stumbling home trying to reclaim her status as an alcoholic, could have become a frightened and vulnerable young woman just like the one Wessling and her friends encountered. To be safe, do we need more conscientious observers like Wessling and fewer people longing to “stumble home” drunk?
