Staff editorial: Just meter it

A proposal that would change D.C. taxis to a meter system instead of the current zone model is stalled in city government. The District is one of the last big cities to use the zone system and it is time to switch.

While a change to meters might cost more for some rides, this is an issue of accountability. The zone system is very confusing, and many students still do not understand it after four years in D.C. It makes it too easy for cab drivers to exploit students and visitors unfamiliar with the system. Riders are forced to bank on drivers’ honesty of cab, while a meter system would allow for visible proof of the fare, ensuring patrons know the actual cost of their ride.

Meters will also be better for honest drivers. Driving during the District’s rush hour would be much more profitable for cab drivers who often take fares very short distances for long amounts of time, but under the zone system are only able to charge by the amount of zones crossed.

The meter system is obviously the better choice – further delay in switching is bad for students, tourists, cab drivers and the District as a whole.
