Late Duquesne goal stuns GW

Tied 2-2 with one minute remaining, Sunday’s men’s soccer game looked like it was headed for overtime until Dan Hartung’s last-minute goal stunned the GW men’s soccer team and allowed Duquesne to escape with a 3-2 home victory. The Dukes (6-1-3, 1-0-1 Atlantic 10) earned their first conference win while the Colonials (4-6, 2-0 A-10) have yet to win a conference game.

Hartung’s unassisted goal, his first of the season, came four minutes after Duquesne’s Damien Pottinger netted his sixth goal of the season off a pass from teammates Derek Mackenzie and James Tarone to tie the game at two.

Duquesne’s late-game heroics were surprising, given the control the Colonials demonstrated in the first 85 minutes of the game. The turn of events came in the 82nd minute, senior Michael Goldman said, when defender Kirk Lewis was ejected with a red card leaving the Colonials a man down for the remainder of the match.

GW controlled play for most of the match, holding a lead for 62 minutes and scoring the go-ahead goal with 11 minutes remaining, but Duquesne took full advantage of the extra man late in the game and the Dukes’ offense proved too much for the Colonials to handle.

“We were playing some of the best soccer we’ve played all season, we had a player thrown out with about eight minutes left, and basically that turn of events changed the complexion of the game,” Goldman said.

GW struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on junior forward Arnar Johannsson’s seventh goal of the season. Johannsson was set up with passes from seniors Matt Osborne and Mike Goldman. The Colonials remained strong for the rest of the first half, maintaining a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Duquesne evened the match at one in the 62nd minute of the game, but the Colonials still controlled play for the most of the second half, taking what they thought would be their final lead of the game in the 79th minute.

Michael Goldman notched his second goal of the season giving the Colonials a 2-1 advantage that would not last.

Despite the tough loss, Goldman said he knows the team will bounce back.

“It’s still very early in conference play; we have a lot of soccer ahead of us. This home stand coming up should help us get back on track.”

Prior to Sunday’s heartbreaker, the Colonials dropped their conference opener to Saint Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. Friday, as they were unable to overcome the Bonnies early 2-0 lead.

The Bonnies (6-3, 1-1 A-10) scored a quick goal less than four minutes into the game when senior midfielder John Phoumanny scored. They increased their lead to 2-0 24 minutes later when freshman Dan Bowen knocked in a cross from classmate Ryan Ercoli.

GW’s only goal came from leading scorer Arnar Johannsson on a penalty shot just over a minute into the second half. Johannsson had just returned to the lineup after a three-game absence due to injury.

Phoumanny finished GW off with his second goal of the game.
