students form new anti-terror group

A new student group, Students Defending Democracy, seeks members to begin the first anti-terror awareness group at GW.

Organizers said the goal of SDD is to be a venue for education and informed debate, through which students can discuss and increase their knowledge of the threat of terrorism.

SDD is partnered with a local D.C. antiterrorism think tank, The Foundation for the Defense of Democracy. FDD promotes informed debate about policies and positions to abolish international terrorism, according to the foundation’s Web site.

Sophomore Jon Satinsky is one of the students responsible for creating SDD. He interned for the FDD and was motivated by his experience to set up a group on campus.

Satinsky received a fellowship from the FDD that recognizes “gifted students who are trained to be pro-democratic activists.”

“People need to see that America is a victim, and not an aggressor,” said FDD Deputy Director David Silverstein.

Sophomore Heera Kamboj, another FDD fellowship recipient, also helped form SDD. Kamboj said she wants students to realize they cannot “fall into complacency” and allow September 11 to happen again.
