GW’s unionized Aramark employees are threatening to strike Monday. Regardless of the validity of their claims, a strike will affect students who eat on campus. The GW administration needs to be proactive in addressing and settling the situation.
These workers have been working without a contract since July 31 and negotiating a new one for almost six weeks. Employees have been very vocal about their concerns and the University should pay closer attention to the complaints, including unsanitary conditions and disrespectful management.
Aramark dining service employees at GW, who are part of the Local 25 union, have registered the most complaints out of any group amongst the 8,000-member regional union. There must be issues that can be resolved to decrease the amount of worker complaints.
GW contracts Aramark to run campus dining facilities, and should take steps to ensure they are run properly. If it is found that Aramark treats workers poorly, the University should intervene or consider another food service company. Poor communication between the administration and unionized workers should not continue and result in students losing out on services, even for a day.
