Staff editorial: Implement security

While one has to wonder why campus officials did not think of it sooner, University Police and the Music Department have agreed on a logical plan to combat a recent rash of instrument thefts.

Since administrators say cost is not an issue in installing new equipment – which could include security cameras and GWorld card readers – music students should expect to return to campus in the fall with a safer place to store their instruments.

The administration should not delay in providing funding for the plan, considering there have been more than $20,000 worth of thefts so far with no serious security measures put into affect.

UPD Director Dolores Stafford points to the administration to foot the $50,000 bill for cameras and new equipment, and the Music Department should not have to pay for security measures. UPD says it is pursuing the thieves and creating prevention measures to stop similar thefts in the future, so it is time for the administration to act quickly on the proposal.
