The Latinos for Progress, Program Board, Lambda Pi Chi sorority and Lambda Upsilon Lambda fraternity will co-sponsor a night of Latino culture Friday at 7 p.m. in the Marvin Center third floor ballroom.

The “Noche de Cultura” will feature both traditional and modern Latin dance, food and ethnic costumes.

Tickets are available in advance for $10 from the Marvin Center Ticketmaster office with a GWorld card and $12 without one.

Freedom Quilt squares due back

Freedom Quilt organizers are calling for student and other groups’ squares by the end of April. Freshman Ari Mittleman, one of three founders of the project, said the group will accept submissions on a case by case basis through the summer if an organization contacts them and needs more time.

The quilt, which organizers will sew together to make an American flag out of 320 panels of cloth, will measure 91 feet wide and 48 feet long and commemorate unity on campus.

Groups who want to participate should e-mail [email protected].

Academic Competition Club places in tournament

The GW Academic Competition Club finished in the top 30 at a national tournament at the University of Michigan last weekend.

The team of three GW students – Edmund Schluessel, Jon Needle, and Andrew Wiseman, a Hatchet staff writer – placed in the top 30 (the final results have not been released) out of more than 36 teams.

The tournament had a pop-culture theme and is the second national competition the team has entered in the last two weeks.

According to a poll of more than 60 teams, the GW competition squad is ranked 30th in the nation after more than 10 tournaments. In five of the tournaments the team placed in the top 10.

The next competition will be held at the University of Maryland at the end of April.

The tournament, titled the Academic Competition Foundation Nationals, is being hosted by the GW team. It was originally slated to be at GW but was moved because of expected protests in D.C.

Black Student Union hosts election

The Black Student Union will host its annual election night Thursday 8-10 p.m. Members of the BSU will vote for next year’s executive board.

The meeting is open to the public, but only BSU members can vote on the candidates.

‘Melanoma Monday’ to be held in Marvin Center lobby

The Medical School will host an event to raise melanoma awareness May 6 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marvin Center main lobby.

Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is a threat in the summer sun and Medical School students will be handing out pamphlets and free sunscreen to help students understand the disease.

There will also be a raffle for GW bookstore gift vouchers.

‘Ask a Librarian’ aids student research

With finals and research papers approaching, Gelman Library will be offering the “Ask a Librarian” service 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the first floor of the building.

The service gives students an opportunity to consult with research librarians on where to get information and other tips on sources of research material.

The librarians can offer Web sites and other materials and will provide students with a transcript of the session including links to the Web sites.

To try the service, go to the Gelman Web site at http://aladin.wrlc.org and follow the “ask a librarian” link.
