Letter: Greek split response

I have closely followed the responses to The Hatchet’s Feb. 14 article (“Greek policies split groups.”) I must respond to Adam Banner’s Feb. 21 letter, which claims the NAACP “apologized for causing a disturbance” in our protest of Sigma Nu’s choice to fly the Confederate Flag outside of their house. Banner has been misinformed. The NAACP never apologized and still stands firm in asking Sigma Nu to realize that, though it may represent the veterans of the losing side of the Civil War, to African Americans in particular, the Confederate Flag is a symbol of a battle fought for economic prosperity through slave labor.

No one has apologized for or condemned Robert Hodge’s inappropriate comments about black sorority members, and in turn black students at this university. And no one is ready to admit that this is all part of a bigger issue.

Until we, as students at this university, sit down and effectively communicate to each other, not letting things like the insensitive, inaccurate Hatchet article written on Feb. 14 divide us further. We invite anyone who believes in the current fight for equality and justice and the never-ending battle against ignorance to join our organization.
