Letter: Foreign students

How disappointed I was to read your unfortunately-titled Feb. 19 article (“Foreign students evade INS”), which contained so many inaccuracies.

I never stated that there are “lax” requirements for tracking students; in fact, the requirements are stringent with respect to regularly responsibilities of non-immigrant students.

It is inaccurate to say that “the current system does not require GW to regulate students” after they have visas and enter the United States. We are required to monitor students, and we regularly advise them of their responsibilities under the regulations.

International students should not be referred to as “immigrants.” The difference between immigrants and non-immigrants is fundamental to all U.S. immigration law.

Contrary to the statement in the article, the Immigration and Naturalization Service cannot view any information in the University’s student records.

Such misinformation, however inadvertent, can escalate cross-cultural tension and conflict.
