Monroe named to elite team

Chris Monroe joins the nation’s top basketball players including Duke’s Jason Williams and Carlos Boozer, in being named to an annual basketball team selected by coaches.

“It’s good to be recognized with the names that are out there,” said Monroe en route to Cincinnati, where the Colonials visit Xavier Thursday night.

The National Association Basketball Coaches team selects 150 student athletes from 15 districts nationwide. Monroe joins Georgetown’s Kevin Braswell, Mike Sweetney, Marshall’s Tamar Slay and VMI’s Jason Conley in the District 4 team.

Four other Atlantic 10 standouts were selected to the NABC first teams. They include Temple’s Lynn Greer, St. Joseph’s Marvin O’Connor, La Salle’s Rasual Butler and Xavier’s David West.

Monroe has been GW’s leading player, carrying the team in wins and losses. Monroe averages about 22 points in 22 games this season. He is shooting 46 percent and was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week Nov. 18.
