SA worthless

I applaud the efforts of the Student Association in working to help students, as this is what one of their main roles should be.

However, the referendum put before the student body this past December leaves me wondering. Does the SA think we care? Some hail the referendum’s passage as a success, but this referendum does not represent the views of the entire student body. In fact, it represents a small minority of the entire GW student community – less than 300 students, most of whom operate inside the SA’s beltway.

How can the SA or, for that matter, anyone think the administration will be more compelled to take action on any referendum that less then 1 percent of the student body voted on? The fact that so few of us voted in this election must serve as a wake up call to the leadership of the SA. We do not care. And you, the SA, are not doing enough to get us to care. The result – a powerless student government, with no clout in dealing with the administration.

As students, we deserve a SA that works hard to make our GW experience better. We deserve a SA that will actively seek out students and meet our needs. We deserve a SA that will help make us care.

Ultimately, we will only be inspired by an SA with leadership that will give us something to care about – an SA that will embrace the challenge of always working to improve the quality of student life. We deserve a SA that is prepared to meet this challenge. GW is a special place, especially at $35,000 a year. But we must always strive for a stronger community, and we need an SA that will lead the way.
