Letter to the Editor: Insulting mistakes

I have been an avid reader of The Hatchet since my freshman year and have never been so appalled at The Hatchet’s reporting of an event as I was at the coverage of the First Annual Class Council Charity Ball in “Students dance for charity” (Nov. 12, p. 7).

The Class Council Charity Ball raised close to $8,000 for the memorial funds of two former GW students, Tom Weaver and John Rizzo, and was attended by 325 GW students, yet the story appears on page seven. The story itself is also inaccurate, and even insulting to the Class Council. The Class Council Charity Ball was not held because the SA’s Fall Ball was canceled. Planning for the Charity Ball began last spring and was intended to unify the campus behind two wonderful charity organizations.

Even more disturbing was the way in which the Class Council was insulted by poor editing. Several times the name of the organization, a proper noun, was not capitalized. In addition, the editors’ comment, “what is this?” which demonstrated their complete ignorance of the organization that sponsored the event and insulted the Class Council, made it to print. Perhaps Russ Rizzo should spend less time writing whiny columns about the effects being editor in chief has on his social life and more time actually editing his newspaper.

As a senior, I have seen and participated in many GW events. Very few, even those planned by University staff, have been as well conceived or as successful in their mission as the Class Council Charity Ball. The Class Council should be applauded for its efforts and its ability to throw such an enjoyable and worthwhile event.
