Volleyball hangs with top A-10 teams

Top conference teams Massachusetts and Rhode Island ended a Colonials two-game winning streak and slashed hopes that GW can compete among the Atlantic 10’s better teams. The Colonials won just one game during the weekend, a 30-23 win over UMass, but kept a number of games close.

Rhode Island made quick work of the Colonials in a 90-minute sweep Saturday at the Smith Center.

In game one, neither team held more than a four-point lead and URI’s Yoland Bogacz and Juliana Valencia each had kills to end the game, giving the Rams a 30-28 win.

Rhode Island took an early lead 5-1 lead in game two, only to see GW battle back to a 7-7 tie. The Rams then took 13 of the next 18 points, putting them up 20-12, and pushing them to a 30-21 victory.

Game three was more of the same, GW kept it close for the first half until the Rams outscored the Colonials eight points to three to finish GW off. URI’s hitting made the difference in the win; the Rams hit .308 in game three to GW’s .083.

Despite a career-high 24 kills by Ruth Lazzari Friday, the Colonials lost to UMass 3-1 at the Smith Center. The Minutewomen held off the Colonials offense, blocking 11 GW attacks.

UMass came out on top 34-32 in a back-and-forth battle for game one. The team took an early 6-0 lead and remained on top until GW scored six straight points late in the game, taking the 29-27 lead. UMass came back to tie it at 32 and a pair of attack errors by Sarah Hokom gave the Minutewoman the win.

Games two and three were close all the way, and the teams ended up taking one apiece. UMass took game two 30-27, and GW took game three 23-30. UMass’ Janeen DeMarte was the difference for the Minutewomen in game two with her pair of kills giving the Colonials the win. Game three remained tied at 13 until GW stepped up their play and took the win.

GW had a chance to tie the match, but lost game four 30-26 and UMass took the set. The Colonials stayed within one at 27-26, but a Britta Stroman attack error and two kills by UMass’ Lymarie Llovet gave her team the win.

GW (6-15, 5-8 A-10) looks to stop its two-game slide when the team travels to Dayton Friday night and Xavier Saturday night.
