MPD expects protests

Three groups have filed permits to demonstrate in the city this weekend. Metropolitan Police expects 10,300 to 18,000 protesters Saturday and Sunday.

The International Action Center has a permit for up to 10,000 demonstrators Saturday, MPD spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile said. The national group plans to assemble at Freedom Plaza, 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and march to the Justice Department, the Navy Memorial and the Capitol building to oppose war and racism.

The D.C. Statehood Green Party and the Washington Peace Party are permitted for as many as 8,000 people.

Police may construct some fencing around the International Monetary Fund and World Bank buildings, Gentile said, and MPD will patrol throughout the weekend.
