WEB EXCLUSIVE: GW announces men’s basketball schedule

GW released the men’s basketball schedule last week, which has the Colonials competing in one nationally televised game and seven regional telecasts throughout the 2001-02 season.

The Colonials, under first-year head coach Karl Hobbs, will open the regular season Nov. 15 with a game against Marshall University in Lexington, Ky., as part of the NABC Classic at the Rupp Arena. Kentucky and Western Kentucky will also compete.

The University of Maryland, Princeton University and the University of Connecticut will join GW in the BB&T Classic Dec 2-3 at the MCI Center. Those games will all be televised on UPN 20.

Perhaps the most anticipated game on the schedule prior to conference action will be the Dec 2 GW-UConn game. Hobbs will lead GW against his former team and many of the players he recruited during his eight years as an assistant coach there.

ESPN will broadcast a Feb 9 GW-Temple from the Smith Center in the team’s only nationally-televised game.

Yale, Binghamton and Stony Brook will participate in the annual Red Auerbach Colonials Classic at the Smith Center Nov 23-24.

GW could play as many as eight games against teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament including a possible match-up against Maryland in the BB&T Classic.

The Atlantic 10 Tournament will be played at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia March 6-9.
