Letter to the Editor: Democratic dissent

I simply cannot believe Bill Eldridge wrote that those who disagree with our government’s response – whatever it may be – to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks should not express their opinions (“Wrong to protest retaliation for terror,” Sept. 17, p. 5). He even went so far as to question whether such dissenters could call themselves Americans. Those who express their dissent with policies of our government are as American as mom and apple pie.

Has the American’s right to freedom of speech been abrogated? All Americans share the horror and the desire to make sure such attacks never happen again, but I pray the day never comes when I am told to shut up if I do not agree on how to do that. For shame, Mr. Eldridge.
