Women’s basketball dominates overseas exhibition

The GW women’s basketball team went undefeated during an 11-day basketball tour of Switzerland and Italy last week. The women trounced five teams by an average of 40 points a game.

In the final game of the trip Aug. 24, GW defeated the Italian club team Alessandria 97-46. The Colonials put out a balanced attack, as each player scored a basket. High-scorer Valerie Williams set the tone putting away 15 points from the post.

As expected, Ugo Oha and Erica Lawrence were healthy contributors scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively. Cathy Joens, back from an ACL injury that sidelined her last season, added 12 points.

The Colonials also had a runaway win in the team’s first game against BC KZO Wetzikon 85-26 on Aug 16. The team defeated Fribourg BBC 79-63 the next day. Fribourg BBC is one of the top teams in Switzerland.

The Colonials dominated Bellinzona 91-47 on Aug 18 and Illijira 79-51 two days later.

Oha and Williams remained consistent down low throughout the exhibition. Lindsey Davidson remained strong from behind the arc.
Kristeena Alexander, who finished her tenure with the Colonials last year, traveled and played with the team. The team’s four recruited players did not travel.
