In his fifth season as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin is internationally recognized for his imaginative programming. Slatkin’s five years with the orchestra include critically acclaimed tours of the United States, Europe and Asia and four American Residencies for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Born in Los Angeles to a distinguished musical family, Slatkin’s musical studies began with the violin. He later studied conducting with his father conductor-violinist Felix Slatkin and continued his education at The Julliard School.

Slatkin has appeared with virtually every major international orchestra and opera company in the past 20 years. He became chief conductor of the British Broadcasting Company Symphony Orchestra in October. Slatkin’s recent opera engagements include the Opera National de Paris, Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. He is now conductor laureate of the Saint Louis Symphony.

Slatkin’s discography, which includes more than 100 recordings with the National Symphony Orchestra and others, have earned him five Grammy Awards and more than 50 Grammy nominations.
