GW men’s basketball associate head coach Rob Wright said Wednesday he will interview for the head coaching position Friday morning with Athletic Director Jack Kvancz. Wright was seen engaged in a lengthy conversation with GW women’s basketball coach Joe McKeown outside the Smith Center Wednesday. GW guard SirValiant Brown, who was unavailable for comment this week and is contemplating a jump to the National Basketball Association, said last Saturday that he would remain a Colonial if Wright was hired as coach.
When contacted Wednesday night, Kvancz declined to comment on the number of candidates who will be interviewed. Kvancz responded the “sooner the better” when asked about a timetable for naming a new coach. Kvancz is looking to replace Tom Penders, who resigned last Friday after three years as GW’s coach.
GW is not the only Atlantic 10 school looking for a new coach. Xavier entered the coaching search Wednesday after seven-year head coach Skip Prosser left for Wake Forest University and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
