WEB EXCLUSIVE: Women’s tennis expects big things at A-10’s

After a disappointing 4-3 loss to American Tuesday, the GW women’s tennis team seeks to extend its season as it heads to Hamilton, N.J., for the Atlantic10 Championships this weekend.

On Thursday, A-10 coaches will gather at Veterans Park in Hamilton to determine the seeds. GW (9-5) and Massachusetts (10-5) are expected to receive the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. They have top conference records.

The Colonials will have a first-round bye and will play on Friday in the second round of the tournament.

All A-10 teams will compete for the title, which Virginia Tech won last year. The winner of the A-10 Tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

On Tuesday, the Colonials were edged by American. The teams tied three-matches apiece through singles play. American emerged victorious with strong doubles play, sweeping the Colonials in three doubles matches and giving them the final point for the 4-3 victory.

Colonial freshmen Nazli Genscoy and Lindy First picked up wins in their second and third singles matches, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-4, respectively, while at No. 4 singles, Kat Stastny added another point with a 6-0, 6-1defeat of American’s Lourdes Riusech. At No. 1 singles, American’s Irina Bovina defeated Tracy Wei 6-4, 6-4.
