McCalla places first, but so do Spartans

The GW gymnastics team fell just short in their bid to defeat host Michigan State University in Saturday’s Spartan Classic that also featured third-place Towson and fourth-place Ball State University. Despite GW’s 195.175-194.650 loss to the first-place Spartans, junior Devin McCalla did it again.

McCalla won the all-around competition with a 39.150, defeating Towson’s Jenn Baierlein (39.000) and Kristen Presutti (38.975). McCalla finished with a 9.700 on the vault, 9.875 on the uneven bars, 9.775 on the balance beam and 9.800 on the floor exercise.

GW’s Jessica Mantak continued to keep McCalla on her toes with another impressive performance. Mantak finished with an all-around score of 38.375 including a first-place tie in the floor exercise event. Kacey Coyne won the vault for the Colonials with a score of 9.875.

The Spartans won the match thanks to strong performances from Jane McIntosh and Melissa Green. McIntosh tied Mantak in the floor exercise and won the balance beam event defeating two other Michigan State gymnasts. Green defeated McCalla 9.900-9.875 on the uneven bars.

The Colonials will travel to West Virginia University for a Sunday match with the Mountaineers.
