Letter to the Editor: Mace mistake

I enjoyed reading The Hatchet’s story about the Order of the Hippo, a group I am proud to remain a member of though I am no longer employed by the University. However, lest the University marshal bring her mace down upon my head, I best clarify that the Order of the Hippo has its own, unique mace as a symbol of the Order. The Order does not use the University mace, which is never allowed to stray far from the University marshal.

The Hippo mace does, however, incorporate some historic elements from the University. Its design includes one small mace from each of the University’s schools. These school maces were once used during school ceremonies and are intended to represent the inclusiveness of the Order of the Hippo. The rest of the design elements are known only to members of the Order.
