GW postpones Garofalo performance

Actress and comedian Janeane Garofalo’s performance at GW, originally scheduled for Feb. 25, has been postponed indefinitely.

The stand-up act in the Smith Center cannot be rescheduled immediately because of conflicts with GW basketball games, said Peter Konwerski, executive director of the Marvin Center and student activities.

Final editing of Garofalo’s upcoming film Big Trouble prohibited her from appearing, Konwerski said.

In place of Garofalo’s act, GW will host an event at the Improv comedy club at 1140 Connecticut Ave. on Feb. 25. Students can get refunds for Garofalo tickets at the Ticketmaster office in the Marvin Center, organizers said.

Konwerski did not offer details about the Improv event, but said they will be publicized soon.

Konwerski said he hopes Garofalo will perform at GW in the future.

Attracting Garofalo involved a three-front effort of the Student Association, Program Board and the Student Activities Center, said Seth Weinert, PB executive chair. Garofalo has appeared in movies including The Truth About Cats and Dogs and Dogma

The Garofolo performance was scheduled to conclude Winter Hoopla, a five-day celebration beginning Feb. 21 sponsored by SAC, PB and the SA, during the final stretch of basketball season.

The celebration will include four home games, a free ice skating event called the Colonial Capades and a free screening of Almost Famous in Lisner Auditorium. The Improv event will now mark the end of the week of events.

“Our goal the whole time has been to get everyone to work together to produce something for the students,” said Ben Posner, chair of Winter Hoopla.
