Water polo places fifth at Southern Championships

The GW men’s water polo team split four matches and finished fifth out of 10 teams at the Southern Championships at the United States Naval Acedemy at Annapolis, Md. this weekend.

The fifth place finish disqualifies GW from the Eastern Championships held in two weeks because only the top four teams from the Southern Championships advance. GW defeated Salem International 13-10 in overtime Sunday before falling to Johns Hopkins University 9-5 later in the afternoon. The Colonials split their matches Saturday, losing to Navy 15-7 and beating Slippery Rock College 6-3. Junior Josh Gimpleson scored 14 goals for GW over the weekend.

The team dramatically improved from the first week of the season, head coach Scott Reed said.
