GW falters in home losses

The GW men’s soccer team was rolling through the Atlantic 10 conference on a four-game winning streak until last weekend, when Rhode Island and Massachusetts stormed into South Riding Field and shut out the battered `Colonials.

The Colonials lost both games to quicker and more aggressive teams. GW’s second-leading scorer, Jason Holloway, played sparingly against Rhode Island and sat out against UMass because of a strained hamstring injury.

GW defender Fridrik Omarsson was out with a hamstring injury for both games.

The Colonials played well against the undefeated Minutemen, holding them to one goal – a rebound off a diving save from goalie Nick Parypinski.

GW (7-4-2, 4-2 A-10) enters this critical period in need of a win and will face a mediocre Duquesne team in Pittsburgh Friday.

The Colonials lost 1-0 to UMass (8-4-2, 4-0-1 A-10) at South Riding Field on Sunday, despite strong defense from goalie Nick Parypinski.

The Colonials, coming off a loss to Rhode Island, were trying to stop their A-10 slide. They had rolled through four A-10 conference games before slamming into Rhode Island. Against UMass, GW was shut down offensively, despite taking 13 shots. The team missed the presence of an ailing Holloway.

The Minutemen were attacking early and GW could not answer. Parypinski’s strong goal-keeping held the Minutemen to one goal.

The goal came in the 34th minute when UMass forward Jeff Deren knocked a rebound off a sprawling Parypinski into the goal.

Rhode Island 3, GW 0
Friday, Oct. 13

The Colonials fell 3-0 Friday to a faster, overbearing Rhode Island (10-3-1, 5-0 A-10) team at South Riding Field. The loss ended GW’s four-game conference winning streak.

GW’s weakened defense gave up 26 shots to the top A-10 team and could only muster five shots on offense.

GW goalie Nick Parypinski took a beating from Rhode Island’s Steven DeMoura. DeMoura scored twice, the first being an unassisted goal off a free kick at the top of the box in the 52nd minute. His second score, six minutes later, came when he took a pass from Nicholas McCreath and beat Parypinski.

A goal by Peter Benevides capped the Rams’ victory late in the second half. The game marked the first time GW was shutout all season.
