Men’s soccer ties Monmouth

Matt Pilkington’s goal in the 89th minute allowed the GW men’s soccer team to leave South Riding Field Saturday with a 1-1 tie against visiting Monmouth University.

The goal was the GW junior’s fourth of the season and third in as many games. It came when Pilkington took a pass from teammate Jeff Greenspan and shot it past goalkeeper Tim Fauth. The ball redirected off of a Monmouth defender before finding the net.

Despite out-shooting Monmouth 31-16 on the day, the Colonials trailed for most of the game.

In the 13th minute of play, Monmouth’s Anthony Viscariello broke free behind the GW defense and beat Colonial’s goalkeeper Nick Parypinski, who ran out to cut off Viscariello’s angle.

Parypinski and Hauth played well in goal, making seven and 13 saves, respectively.

The Colonials (3-1-1) have enjoyed a 1-0-1 record at home this season and have five-straight home contests still to come. GW will host George Mason Wednesday afternoon at South Riding Field.
