I was very excited to read the article, Homosexual students speak out (The Buzz, Sept. 14). I think that is wonderful that we go to a university that is accepting of so many types of people. However, I was greatly disturbed by a quote in the article. One of the students said, Because I’m Jewish, Catholics think I am going to hell, and because I am gay they think I am going to hell.
I am a practicing Catholic. I attended twelve years of Catholic school and never once did I hear such a hateful statement. In the hundreds of hours of religion classes I attended I was never taught that the Catholic Church believes that entire groups of people, whether they be Jewish or homosexual, were going to hell. As a Catholic, I believe that this is a ludicrous statement.
It is ironic that in an article intended to alleviate people from unfair generalizations, that such a sweeping statement was made. One of the central messages of the article was to promote understanding of different types of people before one judges them. I think that more of an understanding of the Catholic faith was needed before such a powerful statement was uttered. Just as I would not stereotype homosexuals, please do not stereotype me.
