Crew finishes 14th at Eastern Sprints

The GW women’s varsity crew team finished 14th out of 18 at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Waramaug May 14. The showing eliminated GW from the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.

The team did well, GW Coach Steve Peterson said, according to a Sports Information press release. I think all of the crews were rowing technically very well, we were just overpowered. Racing into a headwind is always going to be better for the bigger, stronger crews.

Twelve of the 18 schools competing were ranked in the Top 20, including defending champion Brown University.

GW signs three-point specialist

Greg Collucci signed a national letter of intent May 16 to play for the GW men’s basketball team in the fall. He joins Darnell Miller (Bronx, N.Y.) as the second guard to sign with the team in as many weeks. The 6-3 outside shooter was a standout at Cardinal Newman High School (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla) where he averaged 14.3 points and six rebounds as a three-year starter. Collucci’s 51 percent three-point field goal percentage led Palm Beach County last season.

The fact that he’s made more than one hundred (three-point baskets) in each of his varsity years is a remarkable accomplishment, GW Coach Tom Penders said, according to a Sports Information press release. He is a fundamentally sound, well-coached player who doesn’t turn (the ball) over and doesn’t make mistakes.

Volleyball adds two outside hitters

The GW volleyball team announced two more student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Colonials next season. Outside hitters Laura Harrison (Calabasas High School, West Hills, Calif) and Sarah Hokum (Caldwell High School, Caldwell, Idaho) become the fifth and sixth players signed to play for GW coach Yvette Moorehead. The team, which made the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament last November, returns a solid nucleus led by Jill Levey and Tracee Brown.
