And together we pruned the hedges of many small villages

After watching and writing about what seems to be an endless amount of GW sports games this season, I figured why not come back and do it all again next year. There are always those thrilling games that make this job of editor always seem worthwhile. So, with the school year coming to an end, let’s look back at a few truly outstanding moments our sports teams have given us.

The Fall season was dominated by the volleyball team, which came back from a 2-0 deficit against Virginia Tech to win the final three games and the match – the final game was won 16-14. As a result, GW advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Philadelphia and was perhaps an official’s call or two away from a win over top-seeded Temple.

Certainly, Joe McKeown and his women’s basketball team was the Winter story. Well, them and Devin McCalla. The sophomore gymnast seemed to break school records every week. The basketball team lost six games all season and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the team’s mediocre season, the men’s basketball team did win the BB&T Classic at the MCI Center after defeating NCAA-bound Seton Hall and Maryland. To think GW beat Seton Hall who beat Temple in the Tourney – ah, the humanity. But, let’s just say that with the nucleus of Monroe and Brown leading GW next year, I expect Penders and company to win nothing less than the A-10 West and, dare I say it, an NCAA Tournament game.

The gymnastics team also proudly represented GW by advancing to Regionals at the University of Georgia. And the baseball team has established itself as a powerhouse in the A-10. Keep close to find out how seniors Matt Walker, Ryan Dacey and the rest of the Colonials fare come post-season time.

Alright, at this point, I must admit it’s hard not to talk a little playoffs. So, how about them Sacramento Kings? You look at the NBA playoffs and you see the Lakers and Pacers being taken to the fifth and final game. Ah, the Lakers. The team won 19 straight games at one point and then lost their only game in March, to the Wizards. I’m sure all of you caught the surprising outcome in The Hatchet’s Local Pro Scores section – yeah, sure you did. Well, I guess all this tells you is that you really never know what’s going to happen next, unless you’re a Clippers fan.

The St. Louis Blues dominated the hockey season but couldn’t even make it out of the first round. That’s someone’s way of saying that no city deserves too much success. I mean, for the Blues to have closed in on the Stanley Cup only a few months after the Rams shocked the world by winning the Super Bowl – I guess no sports fan is that lucky. Ah, what fun it must have been though to be a Ram and a Blues fan. But I guess that could go for a bunch of cities. I wonder when was the last time one city won two championships in a single year. I’ll get back to you on that if I figure it out on the Internet. My slow computer here seems to be philosophizing.

I mean who would have thought that of Philly’s three active sports teams, only the Phillies would be eliminated by the start of May. The team could go on a ten-game winning streak 26 games into the season and still not be above .500. At least some things stay the same: the dominance of the Yankees and the Braves. I wonder why they don’t just play a full season World Series and see who wins more games.

With that, we can talk more baseball and certainly GW sports next year. Now, I have to pretend I’m writing in a high school yearbook and thank a few select people here at the Hatchet.

To Dustin: Thank you for showing me the way and for your tremendous leadership. Margaret: Thank you for always being willing to scribble on our finished pages an extra time. Your managing and graphic design skills truly are amazing. Berger: take a hike. Nah, I’m just kidding, you did real good for yourself. Good luck in Dallas, but if you become a Cowboys fan that’s the last of you. To all those non-seniors who are leaving, I can’t believe you’re gone and I’m still here. Isn’t it funny the way it all turns out. Steve and Theresa, you guys were fun to work with. What will Francesca do without you? Gayle and Matt, wow, isn’t it funny how I grouped you guys together? Well, you guys are awesome. OH-IO. Dave, what will I do without an eighty inch basketball article to edit? Great job this year.

Alrighty, Francesca’s turn. I think I’m the only person who actually pronounced your last name correctly- Dee-Mel-Lee-Yo. I’m sure Seth and Gabe probably know how to say it. I’m sure you’re giggling now- oh those fraternity boys. Fran, you laugh and laugh and laugh at my jokes, some which really aren’t that funny. You’re always so helpful to all of us and willing to risk some personal aspects of your life for the good of the story. I can’t respect you enough.

Alison, Alison, Alison: I felt like you saved me on so many occasions. Your girlish giggle completely calmed me on Sunday afternoons or Wednesday nights when I just didn’t want to be sitting in Dustin’s office. And hanging out with the Bar Belle on those first semester Tuesday nights made everything alright. I will proudly carry on the weekend ed. meeting tradition and will be sure to keep in touch with you early and often. There’s always Philly sports to talk about. Thank you, thank you. I will miss you very much.

So, that’s about 25 inches folks. Hope you’ve enjoyed it all this year. To senior Kristeena Russell, the first girl to call me Column, here’s the shout out you wanted and to my fellow coaches of the Babe Ruth league Minnesota Twins – Coburn and Coach V. – welcome to the funhouse.

As for that little fact about the last city to win two championships in one season – the dreaded New York Mets and Giants in 1986. Have a great summer.
