Mount Vernon gripes

This is my second year living at the Mount Vernon campus, and for both years, the administration has been pushing the 10-year plan. Unfortunately, other than the administration, I can’t think of anyone who likes it.

The community hates the idea of constant construction over the next 10 years and fought it with everything they could. The students aren’t happy. I’m sure all of you know how miserable it is to live in the midst of construction.

The alumnae have the best reason to be displeased. Almost no building at Mount Vernon will stand untouched. Imagine revisiting your old school and finding your dorm torn down – as all but two will be – and the campus so changed that you can no longer recognize it.

The worst part of the 10-year plan is that they are tearing down the Pub in order to build a parking lot. They could easily move the building over a few feet, but instead, they are going to rip it down and build a new one, more in the style of the Hippodrome. I’m not going to say that the Pub can’t stand some renovation, but it’s one of the oldest buildings on campus. Back when Mount Vernon was a seminary, it’s where commuters would spend time between classes. It’s also where we have visiting musicians in the Coffeehouse Series, many of whom have commented on both the architecture and the acoustics.

There’s not really anything that can be done now, other than remember.
