GW’s Greatest Games: 2 – GW 77, Xavier 74

Feb. 27, 1999
Men’s Basketball

It had all the hype in the world, and it lived up to every bit of it.

With the Xavier series already gaining rivalry status, the Musketeers came to Foggy Bottom for a Saturday afternoon season finale to be televised on ESPN. Students slept out overnight to see if GW could finish 12-0 at home and say goodbye to seniors Shawnta Rogers and Yegor Mescheriakov with a win. And most of all, to the winner of the game would go an outright Atlantic 10 West championship and an almost certain NCAA bid.

To top it off, Rogers had the flu and it was doubtful he would play. But he did, knocking down five three-pointers in the second half, including the winning three at the buzzer that exploded the Smith Center and sent many of the 5,454 in attendance onto the floor in spontaneous celebration.
