Walenga leads women’s water polo

At the Mid-Atlantic Championships this weekend, GW went 2-1, possibly securing a bid to the Eastern Championships in two weeks.

Saturday, GW topped James Madison University 14-5 in the quarterfinals but lost to Villanova University 12-6. Sunday, the Colonials played Maryland for the fifth time this season and topped the Terrapins 12-7 in the consolation game.

Maryland transfer Heather Walenga scored 13 goals in three games for GW.

She really lit it up this weekend, said Coach Scott Reed.

The Colonials, who now stand at 10-10, await word on a bid to the Eastern Championships.

I do (think we’ll get invited), Reed said. We deserve it.

Kendo Club excels at Harvard

The GW Kendo Club competed April 8-9 at Harvard University. Shinya Deguchi won the individual division, while Yoshihisa Ishizuka made the quarterfinals.

The Kendo Club has only been active since last semester. Interested students should see the Kendo Club’s Web site at http://www.geocities.com/shinya_deguchi/Gwhome.htm. -David Holt
