The Nut-Cracker, which originated in the late 1970s, is the most popular Phi Beta Sigma step. Phi Beta Sigma takes credit for the creation of this move.Other Phi Beta Sigma steps include the Passage and the Badstep.

Phi Beta Sigma Brother Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana is credited with introducing African coming-of-age dances to steppers. Step is supposed to be symbolic of crossing over into manhood. Nkrumah also used a cane in his performance, which is still done today.
