Basketball Preview: The Hatchet’s Local Rankings

1. Maryland. Last season: 28-6 (13-3 ACC, 2nd), lost to St. John’s in Sweet 16.

With Steve Francis gone, Coach Gary Williams plugs in superstar Terence Morris and freshman guard Steve Blake. Maryland comes in at 23rd in the coaches’ poll.

2. Georgetown. Last season: 15-16 (6-12 Big East, 10th), NIT first round

The Hoyas haven’t gone away yet. Coach Craig Esherick will look to his hot recruiting class to improve his 8-10 career record. Plays Howard Dec. 6.

3. George Washington. Last season: 20-9 (13-3 A-10, 1st in West), NCAA first round

GW can look to top the local scene with a championship win at the BB&T Classic, Dec. 4-5 at the MCI Center.

4. George Mason. Last season: 19-11 (13-3 CAA, 1st), NCAA first round

They’ve lost point guard Jason Miskiri but still have the 29-year-old George Evans at forward.

5. American. Last season: 7-21 (2-14 CAA, 9th)

Despite the talent Coach Art Perry claims his team possesses, it fell far short of success. This season does not seem to be going anywhere different.

6. Howard. Last season: 2-25 (2-16 MEAC, 11th)

Two years ago, GW beat Howard 101-64. It’s been all downhill from there.
