Basketball Preview: GW Basketball Timeline

1906- GW fields a men’s basketball team

1912- As GW moves to Foggy Bottom, women’s basketball begins

1928- Colonial becomes GW’s mascot

1953-54- With Joe Holup and Coach Bill Reinhart, GW goes 23-3, advances to first NCAA Tournament, rises as high as No. 7 in Associate Press poll

1954-55- Men go 24-6

1961- GW finishes 6-16, but wins Southern Tournament, advances to NCAA Tournament

1975- Women begin modern play as Smith Center opens

1976- GW becomes founding member of Eastern Collegiate Basketball League, forerunner of Atlantic 10

1988-89- Men finish 1-27

1990- Mike Jarvis hired

1990-91- Women win first game in first NCAA Tournament

1991-92- Women again win in NCAAs

1992-93- With Yinka Dare, men make NCAA Tournament, get first ever NCAA wins and advance to Sweet 16; women win two in Women’s National Invitational Tournament

1993-94- Men and women both notch NCAA wins

1994-95- Men beat No. 1 UMass at the Smith Center, end in NIT; women advance to Sweet 16 of NCAAs

1995-96- Men beat No. 1 UMass on road, lose in NCAAs; women win one in NCAAs

1996-97- Women, led by Tajama Abraham, finish 28-6 and advance to Elite Eight in NCAAs; men lose in NIT

1997-98- Alexander Koul and men go 24-9, lose in NCAAs; women run NCAA first-round record to 7-0

1998-1999- Under first year with Tom Penders, Shawnta Rogers, Yegor Mescheriakov lead men to first outright A-10 title, lose in NCAAs; Rogers and Noelia Gomez A-10 Players of the Year
