RHA revives tradition of charity plant sale

The Residence Hall Association held a plant sale Thursday to raise money for housing scholarships.

RHA President Alan Elias said the sale was a huge success, with all plants selling out on the first day. There was more than $800 in sales.

Elias said he discovered the tradition of the plant sale when he found plant receipts in RHA records, and he decided to revive the once annual tradition with Thursday’s sale. The RHA set up outside New Hall and on the H Street Terrace to sell the plants, priced at $5 and $10.

The RHA planned to sell plants Friday, but inventory sold out after a popular first day, Elias said. The RHA is considering another sale in two weeks that will accept students’ Debit Dollars, Elias said.

“We were able to sell everything on the first day,” volunteer Laura Shane said. “Students seem to be really excited about having plants in their rooms.”

Elias said the sale received a positive response from students, faculty and administrators. Some faculty members bought as many as eight plants to furnish offices and most participants requested another sale, he said.

Most of the plants sold were low-maintenance plants which do not demand much attention from busy students and teachers, Elias said.

The RHA will hold a “Casino Night” party Nov. 11 to raise more money for housing scholarships. Elias said the RHA hopes to raise $50,000 this year.
