Crews open season with Head of the Potomac

The GW crews made respectable showings in their first events of the fall season Saturday at the Head of the Potomac. The women’s varsity eight finished second in the open race, 12 seconds behind the U.S. Naval Academy and ahead of Georgetown. The men’s varsity eight finished fifth in the open.

“The second place was real good for the women,” said Coach Steve Peterson. “All in all, I was very happy with the day.”

Men’s water polo splits weekend matches

Hosting a double-header Saturday, the GW men’s water polo team faced Grove City College in its first match, winning 25-2. Being a first-year program, GW coach Scott Reed expected little difficulty from Grove City.

“I just wanted to make sure we played some solid water polo,” Reed said.

Later in the day, the Colonials matched up against No. 13 U.S. Naval Academy in an intense contest. The Colonials dropped the match 10-7.

“I was pleased because we started off strong from the get-go,” Reed said. “It was the best the guys have played all year.”

Hokies might be kicked out

The Associated Press reported last week that the Atlantic 10 Conference may ask Virginia Tech to leave the league a year early. The Big East Conference has invited Tech to join its conference as a full member in two years. A-10 commissioner Linda Bruno said last week to the Roanoke Times that the A-10 may prefer to not have a lame-duck member.

“We don’t want to cut Tech loose with no place to go, but two years is a long time,” Bruno said in the article. “We want to help Tech, but there’s also a concern for the league.”
