Wilee best in A-10 last week

GW gymnast Darden Wilee was named the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week for her high scores against the University of Kentucky and North Carolina State University Jan. 29.

The sophomore posted season highs in all four events at the competition, and her all-around score of 38.850 is the best in the A-10 this season. She also has the top score in the conference in the floor exercise, the sixth best in the balance beam and the seventh best in the uneven parallel bars.

GW also has the highest team score in the A-10 so far, 191.700 against Kentucky and N.C. State. Freshman Devin McCalla has top-six performances on all four apparatuses in the conference this season.-Dustin Gouker


Bocanegra named tops in conference

GW swimmer Juan Bocanegra was named the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week for his swims against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Jan. 30.

The junior recorded season-best times in winning the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (:46.37) in the Colonials’ victory. His IM time is the fastest in the conference this season, and his freestyle time is third in the A-10. He also holds the fastest conference time in the 100-yard butterfly.

Junior Tim Champney has season-best times in four events, the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Alvaro Fortuny has the A-10’s fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke, while sophomore Wes Teter has the best time in the 100-yard freestyle.

Brandyn Roark is the only Colonial woman with a conference best, swimming the league’s fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle.
