Events held according to form Saturday at the Smith Center pool, as the GW men’s swimming and diving team beat Virginia Tech 139-102, and the GW women fell to the Hokies 138-104.

The men beat a Tech team that finished fifth in the A-10 last season, while GW finished second.

GW won all but two events in the men’s meet, as juniors Tim Champney and Juan Bocanegra both won a pair of events for the Colonials. Bocanegra, last week’s A-10 Performer of the Week, won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle. Champney, A-10 Performer of the Week two weeks ago, won the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Wes Teter also won two races for GW, coming from behind to win both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles. Sophomore Mike Cottone (200-yard breaststroke) and senior Rich de Wet (50-yard freestyle) also captured wins for GW.

The GW women lost to a Tech team that finished second in the A-10 last season and was predicted to win the A-10 this season by the conference’s coaches. GW finished third at A-10s last season.

The Colonial women led through the 200-yard individual medley, the fifth event, but Tech took the first three places in the three-meter diving competition to earn a 61-50 lead it would not lose.

Junior Jennifer Skinner continued her dominance of the distance events, earning victories in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles. Freshman Jocelyn Finch won both the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, while senior Dena Hoffman won the 200-yard butterfly for GW.

GW is back in action Saturday when it travels to La Salle.
