A-10 sets site of women’s basketball championship

The 1999 Atlantic 10 women’s basketball championship will be held at the new Forum at the Apollo of Temple in Philadelphia, A-10 commissioner Linda Bruno announced Thursday.

For the last two seasons the A-10 Championship has been held at campus sites for the first two rounds before moving to the home court of the highest remaining seed for the semifinals and finals. Under the new arrangement, all four rounds will be held at the Apollo.

The women’s A-10 Championship will begin Feb. 26 and the final will take place March 1.

The men’s A-10 Championship will start March 3 at the First Union Spectrum, also in Philadelphia.

Women’s basketball earns second top-10 ranking

The GW women’s basketball team was picked eighth in the nation in the preseason top 25 poll of Athlon Sports’ College Basketball 1998-’99 Preview.

Senior forward Noelia Gomez, a Kodak All-America honorable mention selection a year ago, was picked as a second-team all-American by the publication. Junior guard Elisa Aguilar was named a third-team all-American.

The poll marks the second time GW has been ranked in the top 10 in a preseason poll. GW was picked ninth by the Women’s Basketball News Service in August.
