Gelman to add new study lounges on sixth floor

Four new study lounges will be built on the sixth floor of Gelman Library and are expected to open next spring, University Librarian Jack Siggins said.

The new lounges will house fluffy couches and soft chairs so students can study in a more relaxed atmosphere, Siggins said.

“You’ll be able to prop your feet up,” he said. “I think students will really like it.”

Construction is scheduled during mostly daytime hours during the academic year, so noise is a concern, Siggins said. The first floor lounge will not be affected, but students studying in the fifth floor stacks might hear some hammering and drilling.

Demolition of the sixth floor will begin in late September, after construction on the seventh floor is complete. Because classes are held on the sixth floor, Siggins said construction workers will be conscientious about the noise level.

“If we find noise is a problem, we’ll say something,” Siggins said.

The sixth floor of Gelman currently contains offices, classrooms and stacks. The classrooms and stacks will remain on the sixth floor, and the professors’ offices will be moved to the seventh floor to create room for study lounges and rooms.
