National competition seeks to lure young voters to polls

Text messaging and "parties at the poll" are just two of the voter registration ideas that won recognition in Young Voter Strategies first-ever national competition aimed at supporting innovative nonpartisan strategies to register voters ages 18 to 29. Thirteen groups from all around the country were selected for using creative ways to encourage young people to go to the polls.

Delaware U. prof a former skinhead

The University of Delaware has been rife with controversy since late February, when the Wilmington News Journal learned that a Delaware graduate student has ties to skinhead organizations that are known for their white supremacy. Robert Huber, a Ph.D student of physics who has taught physics at the university, has been exposed as a member of skinhead groups and bands that write racist lyrics.

U.S. to release stats on student drug violators

The U.S. Department of Education has agreed to release a demographic breakdown of the 200,000 students denied federal aid due to drug convictions, settling a lawsuit filed last month by the advocacy group Students for a Sensible Drug Policy. "This is a huge victory," said Tom Angell, SSDP's campaigns director.

High court upholds rule on military recruiters

The Supreme Court has affirmed a law that halts federal financing to universities that do not give military recruiters equal access to students that other employers receive. The law, passed in 2004, puts millions of dollars at stake for schools that continue to turn away military recruiters.
