MPD busts election party
Metropolitan Police arrested at least ten people for underage drinking at a campaign party for Student Association candidates at the Delta Tau Delta house early Saturday morning. MPD responded to a call at about 12:30 a.m. and entered the G Street house checking for drinking bracelets and asking to see the IDs of students holding cups of beer.

Proposed free speech monument gets mixed reaction
A City Council proposal to build a giant chalkboard across from the city hall in Charlottesville, Va. as a monument to free speech has caused mixed reaction throughout the small central Virginia town. The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, a non-profit organization devoted to the protection of free speech, proposed raising $150,000 for a nearly 56-foot wall, tentatively called the "Community Chalkboard."

I savor the charming juxtaposition of the avant-garde and traditional. Although I traveled to San Francisco for a journalism conference, I must admit I was predictably intrigued by what lay beyond the hotel ballroom.

Bush's proposed education plan is making its way through the Senate Education Committee, where senators are working to finalize language and omit controversial education issues from the bill's text until the legislation reaches the full Senate. Chairman James M. Jeffords (R-Vt.) and ranking Democrat Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.) have agreed to omit controversial issues in the committee's initial writing of the education bill, Joe Karpinski, communications director for the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pension, told U-WIRE.
Bush highlights tax cut, education proposal in speech
President George W. Bush dismissed criticism of his new $1.6 trillion tax plan in his first speech before a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, saying his proposal is both "reasonable and responsible." In the nationally televised address, he outlined changes for the nation, including an increase in education, health care and defense spending and protection of the Social Security surplus, while stressing the importance of congressional bipartisanship to pass a tax plan he says will give back money to the American people.
