Giving to The GW Hatchet
Hatchet Publications, Inc., is an independent, non-profit corporation that serves to educate students in the areas of journalism, business, production, photography and related fields. To accomplish these ends, the corporation publishes The GW Hatchet in print and online. It also occasionally publishes other related materials, including magazines.
Over the past two years, the paper's online offerings have expanded to keep pace with current trends, including our weekly podcast and video segments to ensure that our students leave GW as well-rounded and fully prepared job-seekers. It is crucial that the next generation of journalism students have a solid basis in honest, fair and truthful reporting as well as the ability to adapt and change so that they can use those skills in media.
The Hatchet is fully independent and as such, derives 100 percent of its revenue from advertising income. In 1997, a scholarship fund was launched that would enable The Hatchet to provide scholarships to its staff. Now, in 2007, The Hatchet is exploring the launch of a new campaign, one that will allow future generations of staff to work on up-to-date computers, software, photography & video equipment, and other technology-related purchases. This technology endowment would supplement, and eventually replace, the operating expenses The Hatchet spends each year.
Most importantly, The Hatchet has spent two years creating a strategic plan. Approved in early 2007, the strategic plan will guide The Hatchet's staff over the next five years. A major component of the plan is seeking out alumni for non-financial commitments. This includes meeting with current staff to prepare them for careers in journalism, speaking at Hatchets events on campus or even attending meet & greet-type events for local alumni. It's become of renewed importance that our former and current staff members connect and share their experiences. Over the past 100 years, our greatest asset has always been the people that have touched The Hatchet.
