Best dive bar: Codmother

1334 U St.

If you’re looking to attend a frat party but pay for your alcohol, Codmother is the bar for you. Sticky floors, flashing lights and loud ’90s and early 2000s await you at this basement bar on U Street.

Known for late nights and plenty of dancing, rub (sweaty) shoulders with everyone from sorority girls to Trump campaign staffers – literally.

The bar is too crowded on weekend nights to order specialty drinks, but a $6 beer and shot combo is a classic and simple rail drinks will keep you going throughout the night. The owners also have a strict “no wine, no Red Bull, no Jaeger” policy, so stay realistic about what you’re going to find behind the bar.

Don’t break out your nicest outfit for the night because you’ll likely end up with someone spilling cheap alcohol on you – purses and other accessories are also best left behind if you ever want to see them again. On the busiest nights the bar is packed, leaving just enough room to jump up and down while screaming the lyrics to a Blink-182 song with a stranger you met only moments beforehand but has since become your newest best friend.

Weekday nights are more low key – and the lights in the bar actually stay on, so stick to the weekends for an authentic Codmother experience.
