If you need to add some namaste to your day, make time to take a class at Yoga District. The D.C. fitness chain has studios in seven locations throughout the area, including one on I Street between 19th and 20th streets – just blocks from the Foggy Bottom Campus.

While the I Street location is somewhat cramped, the two studio rooms feel homey and relaxing. Light pours in through the windows and plants sit in the corners.

When I attended a Vinyasa class, the instructor greeted me individually and asked about any accommodations I may need for my practice, which made the class feel more personal. The classes at Yoga District are certainly more intense than those at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, so if you’re new, be sure to sign up for a level one class. The Vinyasa class I attended was also more traditional than other yoga classes I’ve taken – the instructor chanted and played a drum, before playing music on a stereo.

Yoga District also offers more creative versions of yoga classes, like Yogalates – a mixture of yoga and pilates, and special workshops and training sessions for more serious yogis.

Yoga District prides itself on offering eco-friendly practices, too. The soap in the bathroom was all-natural, students were asked to borrow a reusable cup if they needed water and there wasn’t a paper towel in sight.

Stop by Jrink on your way out for an all-natural juice to round out your fitness experience, because the two businesses share a building.

Yoga District classes cost $11.35 for a one-time drop-in pass and special classes are free or by donation. Not to worry if you don’t own a yoga mat, because there are dozens to borrow for a $2 fee.
