In order to pay for that, and maintain a profit, they are charging students more. They were required to increase their coverage due to Obamacare. It is clearly involved in the higher premiums.

This is outrageous! I am all for mandatory health care, but we should be able to choose and pick the best option. The way GWU handled this was more than sneaky and quiet honest pretty F-ed up! I am insured through a German health insurance and get way better coverage than the Aetna plan would provide me with for a fraction of the cost. Yet, I am being forced by a random foreign company (Aetna) to be insured through them. NO WAY!It should be in GWU’s interest that their students have the best possible health insurance and not force them to stay with this inferior company!

If $180/month is the correct figure, the Hatchet should make the correction to this story.

(And it seems it IS the correct figure, since the story says students “must pay at least $2,200 for the University plan” — $180/month comes to $2,160 a year.)

$180/month for comprehensive medical insurance is still fairly cheap, all things considered.

Welcome to Obamacare. I agree with the students, of course. If you have insurance elsewhere, GW should not force you to buy it from Aetna.
