GW is actually a private non-profit university, not a for-profit. And when you consider GW has thousands of employees and astronomical real estate prices and many, many students do not pay the actual price of tuition due to scholarships, trying to cover salaries and administrative needs becomes tricky.

The rise in the number of students seeking the counseling they need is heartening, and nothing should be put in place to hinder it. These are difficult times, and universities are admitting more students with mental health histories than ever before (because issues can be controlled better with medication). We should pride ourselves on being a supportive place for students who may be struggling. For goodness sakes, I can't stand that everything here is assessed in terms of dollars and cents.

I agree with Mr. Gadsden.

Yes, we know GW is a for-profit school. BUT, I really think GW would be able to cover admin costs and salaries from the UCC with the profit they're making from yearly tuition from thousands of students.

It's a shame that the administration has struggled with this issue for such a long time. The UCC should offer basic counseling services on a regular, unlimited basis. If the patient feels they need more intensive treatment OR if the practitioner recommends more aggresive treatment from other community based resources then AND ONLY THEN would this discussion be applicable and appropriate.

Not everything at GW needs to be making money... The Counseling center was pushed to be free, at least for a little bit, because of the lack of help GW was providing for students. GW is the 1%. The 1% of schools that think its a good idea to charge students even more money for help after draining their pockets for years. Not many other schools have the gall to be so blatantly profit-based as GW often does. But at the point where it is actively injuring the student population, well we have a problem here don't we?
