We elected a convicted felon as mayor and then re-elect him to the city council; the city nearly went bankrupt and had to be under a federal control board until they got their act together. And now, we have a corrupt mayor who just wants to raise taxes. If DC becomes a state, it will be a welfare state and everyone in NW and other people who don't want to be taxed to the extreme will move out. I say to "no taxation without representation" -- fine, I don't care about the lack of representation, just don't tax me! DC has clearly not demonstrated that it can govern itself as a state. DC does not "get" money for Medicare. Medicaid is administered by the states (including DC as one of its many state functions) with funds distributed by the federal government in what can only be described as a system intended to be unfair. The money that Congress doles out to the District doesn't begin to make up for the loss of taxable real estate the federal government uses! The majority of long time DC citizens live at or below the poverty line. The majority of the city services, fire and police, are funded by every other state in this union through congress. Due to the low income base of the city overall they would never be able to fund the state except through exhorbitant taxes, which would obviously be shouldered by NW DC. Talk about a welfare state.
