DC has clearly not demonstrated that it can govern itself as a state. We elected a convicted felon as mayor and then re-elect him to the city council; the city nearly went bankrupt and had to be under a federal control board until they got their act together. And now, we have a corrupt mayor who just wants to raise taxes. If DC becomes a state, it will be a welfare state and everyone in NW and other people who don't want to be taxed to the extreme will move out. I say to "no taxation without representation" -- fine, I don't care about the lack of representation, just don't tax me!

BTW, Medicare is not run by the states; it is 100% federal, the same benefit for all retirees and other beneficiaries, rich or poor. DC does not "get" money for Medicare. Medicaid is administered by the states (including DC as one of its many state functions) with funds distributed by the federal government in what can only be described as a system intended to be unfair. The money that Congress doles out to the District doesn't begin to make up for the loss of taxable real estate the federal government uses!

I am basically in favor of statehood - that's my slogan on our license plates - but I am not in favor of New Columbia as the name of the state. Where or what is old Columbia? What's new about this one?

What I'd prefer is another term, not state, for an entity that would have voting representation in Congress, including a senator or even two. It would be a sort of entity that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, or even the Pacific territories, could become, if they wanted to pay Federal tax, as we do.

As for the first comment, no, the majority of DC residents are neither poor nor unemployed. If you want to make disparaging comments, at least get your facts right.

The movement is intensifying and it's time to let people know why exactly Statehood is right, how it can be achieved and silence the doubters. The DC Statehood Student Association will have an info session at the MSSC on Saturday at 3pm (there will be pizza) where both supporters, opponents and those who may not know about it can come, talk about it, debate it and learn how to get involved. Hope all of you join us. Link to the FB event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125145580927925

Charles- You are VERY wrong. DC residents pay 3.9 Billion in Federal taxes, which goes to Congress and then Congress appropriates it back to DC. DC residents pay local taxes that also go to Congress who gets to decide on how we spend those monies too! WE the residents pay for our Fire, police, schools, libraries, etc.
Yes, there are too many poor people in the city that NW residents pay for but not other states! The federal assist we get is in Medicare and Medicaid just like every state in the union. If we were a state we'd have 2 Senators to make sure we got more!

Partition the city. With the exception of the immediate area around Capitol Hill, throw the NE and SE back to Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties, respectively. NW and SW will remain under Federal control.

Either that or revoke home rule. It isn't working.

Talk about a welfare state. The majority of long time DC citizens live at or below the poverty line. The majority of the city services, fire and police, are funded by every other state in this union through congress. Due to the low income base of the city overall they would never be able to fund the state except through exhorbitant taxes, which would obviously be shouldered by NW DC.
