Sports In Brief

The Colonials earned success in the classroom in 2011, posting the fifth highest grade point average among Collegiate Water Polo Association members.

GW’s combined GPA was 3.300, the fifth-highest among Collegiate Water Polo Association members, trailing Harvard, 3.344, Wheaton College, 3.430, Macalester, 3.470, and Connecticut College, which was the national leader with a 3.500 average.

The program qualified ten student-athletes for the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic Team. Alumna Erin Delker, along with senior Monica Hanson, earned outstanding status, posting cumulative GPAs between 3.71 and 4.0. It was the third such accolade of Delker’s career as a Colonial, and the second time in two years Hanson was named to the All-Academic Team.

Junior Jessie Hurd, senior Megan Walker and sophomores Erin Dickson and Allison Littlejohn all earned superior status with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.7. Both Walker and Hurd were named to the All-Academic team for the third and second times, respectively. Graduates Charlotte Schou and Melissa Sesana, along with sophomores Rachael Bentley and Katherine Berry, earned excellent status with GPAs between 3.2 and 3.4. Schou also appeared on the All-Academic Team for the third time in her career with GW.

The Colonials posted a 7-10 overall record last season, finishing eighth of 11 teams at the CWPA Eastern Championship. They’ll look to improve upon that finish in the 2012 season, returning senior Allison Peotter, who already tops GW’s career lists in assists, steals and swim-offs won, and is on pace to become the program’s leader in goals and points in 2012.

Number Crunch: 191

The number of career victories men’s soccer head coach George Lidster has heading into this season – the most in program history.
